James, who joined the Woods Fuller team in 1991, handles trial work involving government liability, eminent domain, insurance disputes and business litigation, and minority-shareholder claims.

While in law school, James was articles editor for the South Dakota Law Review. After law school, he clerked for the Honorable C. Arlen Beam with the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

James is listed in "The Best Lawyers in America," and "Chamber's USA." He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates.

James is a member of the South Dakota Defense Lawyers Association and Defense Research Institute. He serves on the South Dakota State Bar Law School Committee. James is a past board chair of the Volunteers of America, Dakotas; First Lutheran Church; and the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. He was also a member of the Civil Service Board for the City of Sioux Falls.
