EXPERIENCE:
Joel is a Sioux Falls native who has been practicing law for over ten years at Woods Fuller. Joel works in the firm’s intellectual property practice group where he focuses on trademarks. Clients turn to Joel for guidance on creating and protecting strong brands.
Joel routinely helps clients register and maintain their trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Joel is currently responsible for hundreds of trademark applications and registrations.
As part of his trademark practice, Joel assists clients with domestic and international trademark clearance, prosecution, and enforcement. When disputes arise, Joel is able rely on his extensive litigation experience to help his clients from start to finish. Joel represents clients in state and federal court, as well as before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
In addition to trademark matters, Joel continues to maintain a robust business litigation practice and has experience representing clients in numerous types of commercial cases. These types of disputes include trademark infringement, patent infringement, copyright infringement, unfair competition, and misappropriation of trade secrets. Joel has argued before the South Dakota Supreme Court as well as the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Joel is a member of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and recently was appointed to INTA’s Unfair Competition Committee.
Prior to joining the firm, Joel clerked for the North Dakota Supreme Court. Outside the office, Joel enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and reading.
