EXPERIENCE:
Susan Rasmussen represents businesses, developers, local governments, nonprofit organizations, and individuals in matters involving municipal law, business transactions, real estate, governance, and family law. Her practice is focused on helping clients navigate complex legal issues with practical, strategic counsel that supports informed decision-making, advances projects and personal goals, and minimizes legal risk. In her family law practice, Susan assists clients with divorce, custody matters, adult and minor guardianships and conservatorships, and adoptions, providing thoughtful guidance through some of life’s most significant transitions.
Susan has developed a strong concentration in municipal law and regularly advises elected officials and municipal administrators on the legal and operational challenges facing local government. She provides guidance on governance, public meetings and records compliance, ordinances and code enforcement, development and construction projects, land use and zoning matters, municipal utilities, real estate transactions, personnel issues, and ethics and conflict-of-interest concerns.
Susan’s background as both a paralegal and attorney provides a perspective grounded in years of hands-on experience. This foundation gives her a deep understanding of how legal issues evolve long before they reach the courtroom, allowing her to identify practical solutions early in the process. Before entering the legal profession, Susan earned a master’s degree in Classics and taught Latin at the elementary, secondary, and collegiate levels. Her experience as an educator continues to influence her practice, enabling her to explain complex legal concepts in a clear, accessible manner that clients value.
Susan chose to join the team at Woods Fuller for its long-standing traditions of integrity, excellence, and community service, and she strives to advocate for her clients in accordance with these values. As a Sioux Falls native, giving back to her local community is important to Susan, particularly through programs that support families and small businesses. She currently serves on the board of directors for several local nonprofit organizations. She also serves in leadership roles as a member of a local school board and as a director of the South Dakota Municipal Attorneys Association. Outside of her practice, Susan often enjoys time outdoors with her family of active young children.
